About Me

I am Jessica Straw, a novelist and screenwriter.

I love exploring characters through stories – especially characters with deep-seeded emotional problems. Plot-driven stories are certainly fun, but my favorite stories to write feature people dealing with their psychological issues.

In both novels and films/television, I love a good character drama; other favorite genres include mystery, science fiction (and science fiction lite), and fantasy. Agatha Christie is still my favorite mystery author, with And Then There Were None still my favorite book, and I will not apologize for it! I’ve been a huge Young Adult fan for years, and I still love a good YA novel (and when done right, YA film adaptation), but as I’ve gotten older I’ve moved into more adult reading which I’m enjoying.

While I’m not a huge fan of comedies*, I love humor in my dramas.

*I will never see another comedy in the theatre after the last one I saw made me want a refund – I’m looking at you, A Million Ways to Die in the West. My own fault, I knew I didn’t like comedies yet I went anyway.
